How to keep your playground equipment maintained during the autumn months

playground maintenance in autumn and winter
Essential Tips for Playground Maintenance During Autumn

Playground equipment brings joy and excitement to children, offering a unique place for play and adventure. As a playground owner, maintaining your equipment is crucial not only for extending its lifespan but also for ensuring the safety of the children who use it. Proper maintenance keeps your playground looking new and reduces the risk of injury. The team at Peak Playgrounds provide detailed tips on how to maintain your playground equipment during the autumn months.

Know What to Expect

Autumn introduces variable temperatures and increased moisture, both of which can damage playground equipment. Wet and dry cycles can degrade the outer coating of materials, while fluctuating temperatures stress joints and bolts, making them prone to rust. Although the damage during autumn might seem minor, it can accumulate over time if not addressed. Here’s how to keep your playground equipment in top condition.

Playground Maintenance Tools

Before you begin, gather all the necessary tools fo playground maintenance. You will need a torch, WD-40 oil, mulch, polyurethane and brushes, an S-hook plier, and wrenches for tightening bolts. Having a roll of paper towels on hand will also help with cleaning up the playground equipment.

Perform Weekly Inspections

During autumn, regular weekly inspections of your playground equipment is essential. These inspections are preventative and will become easier with routine. Check all bolts on climbing frames and play towers to ensure they are secure. Examine plastic parts for any signs of damage. Apply new mulch and lightly rake it, as increased rainfall often requires more mulch maintenance.

Clean and Prepare for the Following Year

Autumn is the perfect time to prepare your playground for winter and the upcoming year. Treating joints with WD-40 reduces the risk of rust. Inspect nearby trees and trim any branches within six feet of the playground to prevent them from encroaching. Check the swing clearance to ensure it hasn’t decreased since your last measurement.

Use a torch to inspect for insect or animal activity around and inside structures like outdoor shelters and play towers. Finally, applying a coat of polyurethane to the equipment can protect it from the elements, keeping your playground safe and looking like new.

Ready to Keep Your Playground in Top Condition?

By following these maintenance tips from Peak Playgrounds, you can ensure that your playground equipment remains safe, attractive, and ready for children to enjoy. Regular inspections, cleaning, and preparation are key to preserving the joy and excitement that your playground brings to the community.
