Outdoor Shelter Installation for a Derbyshire School

outdoor classroom with removable panelsDerbyshire

When Middleton Primary School in Derbyshire set out to create a new outdoor learning area, they wanted more than just a covered space. They were looking for a durable, weatherproof, and attractive outdoor classroom shelter that would support learning, inclusion, and play throughout the year.

That’s where we came in. At Peak Playgrounds, we specialise in bespoke outdoor classrooms and shelters designed specifically for school environments. This case study shows how we transformed a disused patch of grass into a functional, engaging learning space — and how we supported the school every step of the way.

The School’s Challenge

Like many schools, Middleton had limited indoor space and a growing demand for flexible learning environments. They were eager to extend their curriculum outdoors, but their grounds lacked shelter from rain and strong sun — meaning their outdoor area was often unusable during key parts of the day.

Their goals included:

  • Creating a multi-use space for lessons, group work and storytelling

  • Ensuring the shelter would be safe, low-maintenance, and long-lasting

  • Minimising disruption during the installation process

Our Solution: A Timber-Framed Outdoor Classroom Shelter

Following an initial site visit and consultation with senior leaders, we proposed a 6m timber-framed hexagonal shelter, featuring:

  • Pressure-treated FSC-certified timber

  • A shatterproof polycarbonate roof for natural light

  • Integrated seating with backrests

  • Anti-slip composite flooring

  • Rounded edge framing to meet safety requirements

We also considered the long-term use of the space, ensuring it would accommodate up to 30 pupils comfortably — perfect for class activities, quiet reading time or one-to-one interventions.

Installation Process

To fit around the school’s schedule, installation was carried out over two working days during term time, with minimal disruption to staff or pupils. Our team handled:

  • Ground preparation and levelling

  • Full construction and roofing

  • Clean-up and safety checks

We followed all safeguarding protocols and provided the school with RAMS documentation, DBS-checked team details, and our public liability insurance certificate in advance.

The Outcome

Since its completion, the shelter has been used daily by staff and pupils alike. Whether for forest school activities, quiet learning, or lunch break relaxation, it’s proven itself as a valuable addition to the school grounds.

Feedback from staff:

“We’ve seen an increase in engagement from children who previously struggled indoors. The space gives them freedom while keeping them safe and focused.”

Feedback from pupils:

“It’s like a secret learning hut! I love doing maths outside now.”

Why This Project Worked

The success of this installation came down to collaboration and careful planning. We aligned the design with the school’s learning goals and delivered on time and within budget. This approach is what we offer to every school we work with.

Our shelters don’t just tick the health and safety boxes — they become well-used, well-loved assets that enhance the learning experience for years to come.
